Overview

This educational initiative focuses on issues related to optimizing the use of oral antiplatelet therapy in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Despite recent advances in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), mortality associated with both ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) remains unacceptably high. Patients who experience an acute myocardial infarction are at increased risk for future coronary episodes, and mortality increases with subsequent events. While the need for dual antiplatelet therapy in patients with ACS is well established, pharmacists are met with many clinical dilemmas as they seek to optimize therapy, such as the duration of oral antiplatelet therapy, clopidogrel nonresponsiveness, and laboratory testing of platelet reactivity and patient genotypes. New information related to emerging treatment strategies, such as triple antiplatelet therapy and pipeline agents, is also available.
